Living For The City

Writings by Walt Whitman, Carl Sandburg, and Stevie Wonder

Each one is about living for the city, even though only one is named Living For The City. The difference is two of the writings, Mannahatta and Chicago, are by white men who are glorifying their city despite some of the downsides of living in a city. The other one is the song Living For The City by Stevie Wonder which is about the struggles a family of color go through to be able to survive in a city.

I wanted to achieve the idea that privileged white people and people of color experience life in the city differently. To do this I placed the song by Wonder between the writings by Whitman and Sandburg, facing the opposite direction. This is to show whats on the other side of the white mans interpretation of what life is like living in the city.
